This year’s version of the “an Acoustic Café evening” tour features Erin McKeown, Carrie Rodriguez and Kelly Joe Phelps.  Each evening is hosted by Carrie Rodriguez who explains the evening and how it will flow.  The order of artist appearances on stage changes every night at the whim of the artists and the promoters.  Each act performs a solo set that may or may not include some musical or vocal help from the other acts – each night is a detour, an exploration.  The constants are that the artists all enjoy themselves and each other, that they all play together for an encore at the end of the night, and that the audiences get an intimate, affordable, often amazing live experience featuring great solo artists collaborating live together.

My train of thought just derailed.

We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.

One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.

You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?

If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and there would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.

We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.

Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!

Sheldon, on Christmas

Penny:  Hey, Sheldon.  Are you and Leonard putting up a Christmas tree?

Sheldon:  No, because we don’t celebrate the ancient pagan festival of Saturnalia.

Penny:  Saturnalia?

Sheldon:  In the pre-Christian era, as the winter solstice approached and the plants died, pagans brought evergreen boughs in their homes as an act of sympathetic magic intended to guard the life essences of the plants until spring.  This custom was appropriated by northern Europeans and, eventually, it became the so-called Christmas tree.

Penny:  Okay, well, thank you for that.  I got you and Leonard a few silly neighbor gifts so I’ll just put them under my tree.

Sheldon:  Wait!  You bought me a present?

Penny:  Uh-huh.

Sheldon:  Why would you do such a thing?

Penny:  I don’t know.  Because it’s Christmas?

Sheldon:  I know you think you’re being generous but the foundation of gift-giving is reciprocity.  You haven’t given me a gift; you’ve given me an obligation.  … now I have to go out and purchase for you a gift of commensurate value and representing the same level of friendship as that represented by the gift you’ve given me.  It’s no wonder suicide rates skyrocket this time of year.

Sheldon, on Christmas (again)

Penny:  Sheldon, what about you?  Did you have a Christmas tree?

Sheldon:  Oh yes.  We had a tree.  We had a manger.  We had an inflatable Santa Claus with plastic reindeer on the front lawn.  To make things even more jolly, there were so many blinking lights on the house they induced neighborhood-wide seizures.

Penny:  I take it you don’t wanna help us trim the tree?

Sheldon:  I do not.  But, if you insist on decorating a spider-infested fire hazard in my home, I would request that you add this.

Penny:  What is it?

Sheldon:  You’re kidding, right?  It is a bust of Sir Isaac Newton.

Penny:  Oh sure, very Christmassy.

Sheldon:  Excuse me, it is much more Christmassy than anything you’ve put on the tree.  December 25th, 1642, Julian calendar, Sir Isaac Newton is born.  Jesus, on the other hand, was actually born in the summer.  His birthday was moved to coincide with the traditional pagan holiday that celebrated the winter solstice with lit fires and slaughtered goats.  Which, frankly, sounds like more fun than 12 hours of church with my mother followed by a fruitcake.
